Lt. Col. Leo R. Gray, USAC - WWII Leo Gray, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen who fought in the skies over Europe during World War II, died Friday September 23, in his Coconut Creek home. He was 92. Lt. Col. Leo R. Gray made significant contributions to the United States throughout his military and civilian careers. Soon after high school graduation, Lieutenant Colonel Gray joined the Army Air Corps and began his aviation cadet training in 1943. Little more than a year later he graduated from the Tuskegee Army Air field as a Second Lieutenant, single engine pilot. While stationed in Italy as a fighter pilot, Gray flew 15 combat missions in P-51s for a total of 750 hours flying time. He left active duty in 1946, but remained in the USAF Reserves until 1984. During his 41 years of military service, Lieutenant Colonel Gray earned a Coveted Air Medal with one Oak Leaf cluster and a Presidential Unit Citation. Gray earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1950, a Masters degree from the University of Nebraska in 1952, and did post graduate work at the University of Maryland from 1962-1964. He began his 30 year career with USDA in 1953 as a Technical Assistant at the University of Massachusetts Agricultural Extension Service. Gray wore many hats in the USDA career. He served as an agricultural economist with the Economic Research Service, an economist with APHIS in California, and as Director, Program Planning Office of the Food Safety & Inspection Service to mention a few. In addition, he was an economic consultant to United States Department of Agriculture in West Africa. His professional and civic life reflected his deep commitments to the Tuskegee Airmen, to agricultural economic research organizations, and to civil rights. He was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen Inc, and in 1991 became founder and president of the Miami Chapter. He was the past president, vice president and treasurer of the East Coast Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, the founder and past president of the Forum on Blacks in Agriculture, the past president of Good Hope East Civic Association in Silver Springs, MD, and a former member of the Richmond, California, Model Neighborhood Citizens Board. Other memberships included the Air Force Association, the Retired Officers Association, the NAACP, the Gulfstream Chapter AMMV, the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum, and several more organizations. Lieutenant Colonel Gray traveled extensively to North, Central and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. He is survived by his wife, Dianne, his 6 children, and 10 grandchildren. |

The migration of Germans into Volhynia (as of 2013 covering northwestern Ukraine from a short distance west of Kiev to the border with Poland) occurred under significantly different conditions than those going to other parts of Russia. By the end of the 19th century Volhynia had over 200,000 German settlers. Their migration began at the encouragement of local noblemen, often Polish landlords, who wanted to develop their significant land-holdings in the area. The Germans in Volhynia were scattered about in over 1400 villages. Though the population peaked in 1900, many Germans had already begun leaving Volhynia in the late 1880s for North and South America.
World War I was the first time Russia went to war against Germany since the Napoleonic era, and Russian Germans were quickly suspected of having enemy sympathies. The Germans living in the Volhynia area were deported to the German colonies in the lower Volga river in 1915 when Russia started losing the war. Many Russian Germans were exiled to Siberia by the Tsar's government as enemies of the state - generally without trial or evidence. In 1916, an order was issued to deport the Volga Germans to the east as well, but the Russian Revolution prevented this from being carried out.

Wolhynische: external name for a geographical place, group of people, or language/dialect: a common name used only outside the place, group or linguistic community in question, usually for historical reasons.
The region of Volhynia -- in German, Wolhynien -- is in the northwest corner of Ukraine, west of Kyiv. It borders Poland to the west and Belarus to the north. Volhynia was the name of an administrative district, called a gubernia, before the Russian Revolution. Major cities include Zhitomir, Rowno and Lutsk. In the mid-1800s many Germans settled in Volhynia. It has changed hands numerous times throughout history and been divided among competing powers. Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, it has been part of the independent nation of Ukraine.

"Broward Goes to War"
by Andrew Marocco
On December 5, 1945, five TBM Avengers, known as Flight 19, took off from NAS Fort Lauderdale on a training mission. After becoming disoriented and lost, radio communication ceased. Flight 19 was never seen or heard from again. Thus, cementing Flight 19, as the cornerstone of the Bermuda Triangle Legend. Seventy years later, it is still a mystery. Part of the reason could be blamed on the fact that the general public has never seen the most important key to the mystery: A published version of the “original navy investigation”. But now all of that has changed.
Andy Marocco, founder of AeroQuest.org, has compiled and organized all of the “original documents” of the 1945 investigation from government microfilm and published them in a series of book volumes, known as the FLIGHT 19 Naval Report. For the first time, teachers, students and researchers will finally have access to all the “original documents” of the Flight 19 investigation in a “printed standard” for collaboration, discussion and reference. It is believed that the FLIGHT 19 Naval Report volumes will become “key tools” for the next generation of Flight 19 investigators to help solve the greatest aviation mystery of all time.
Volume 1 of the FLIGHT 19 Naval Report: The Testimony, the experts and personnel that testified in the Naval Hearings of December 1945, share their intimate knowledge and opinions about Flight 19. Volume 1 references the planes, the men, their training, the mission and ultimately the unsuccessful search and rescue. Volume 2 of the FLIGHT 19: The Exhibits.

The Wrong Hangar, by Ken Kaye Amelia Earhart’s fate has captured the imagination of conspiracy buffs for decades. Since she and her Lockheed Electra mysteriously disappeared in 1937, there have been countless theories about what happened to the woman who set out to fly around the world. In his intriguing new novel, The Wrong Hangar, author Ken Kaye, explores the possibility that the pioneering aviatrix secretly and safely returned all those years ago. He masterfully describes the events of Earhart’s supposed postflight life through the skeptical eyes of Marty Allen, a jaded tabloid journalist hired to track down Earhart’s long-lost plane. As Allen unravels the web of lies cocooning the true story about Earhart and her family, he starts to understand why the shroud of mystery has remained intact for so long. He also begins to have an inkling that he may finally be on the brink of true love. As Kaye artfully navigates the questions of morality and values that confront Allen throughout this suspenseful thriller, readers will be irresistibly drawn in by his singular dilemma: Should he pursue riches and fame or love and obscurity?
