Victory Florida

2015 marks the 70 year anniversary of the end of World War II in 1945. The Florida Department of State is drawing attention to this important anniversary with the campaign “Victory Florida,” which honors and celebrates the heroes and heroines of World War II while educating Floridians about the important role Florida played in training for the battlefield and on the home front during the war.

The Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum, proudly participates in bringing awareness to Florida's history.

Florida WWII History

Florida was an active training ground for the United States’ military. By December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the United States officially entered the war, more than 170 military installations were established in Florida. After the war in 1945, many surviving service members who had been stationed in Florida prior to active duty returned to settle here. The state’s population grew more than 46% during the 1940s and even more in the 50s as a likely result of the war-time military postings.

In addition to the hundreds of thousands of servicemen and servicewomen who came to Florida from other states to train and serve, over 248,000 Floridians, including more than 50,000 African Americans, volunteered or were drafted into the military. Over 4,600 Floridians lost their lives while in service during World War II.  Today the United States is losing its World War II veterans at the rate of approximately 900 per day and time is of the essence to honor these heroes.

In 2013, Florida reached a significant milestone, the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de León's arrival on Florida's east coast. Building on the success of Viva Florida 500 in 2013, The Florida Department of State continues to work with partners statewide to promote cultural and historical experiences through a multi-year campaign called Viva Florida, which promotes 12,000 years of Florida’s people, places and cultural achievements. The Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum, proudly participates in bringing awareness to Florida's history.

This book encompasses experiences that span almost a century in the life of Edgar "Buddy" Galvin. From notes and memory, Buddy reflects on the major highlights and lessons gleaned over that time. His story illuminates events in his lifetime; from his childhood growing up in Baltimore Maryland during Prohibition and the Great Depression, his long lasting affair with music, and his work as a 1st class ship-fitter where he witnessed the launching of the first Liberty ship the SS Patrick Henry.

Buddy relates in an intimate fashion, his experience in the United States Navy as a Long Range Aerial Navigator aboard B-24 Liberators, while on anti-submarine patrol out of Dunkeswell, England. He also gives a personal account of his participation in the search for Flight 19, one of the great aviation mysteries.

His life has been enriched with his travels around the world, family and friends, civic work, and his continuous commitment with volunteer efforts in the South Florida community.

Avenger Hot Sauces are here!

Inspired by the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale CANTINA in WWII, we proudly introduce our Hot Avenger Sauces !  Crafted with fresh ingredients from Mo Hotta Mo Betta !  Decorated with vintage World War II art from the exhibits at NASFL Museum, and available in 5 delicious choices:  Fire Roasted Habanero, Cayenne Garlic, Jalapeño Classic, Chipotle Adobo, and Red Savina Habanero.  All proceeds benefit the Museum, so get tasting !

  • Fire Roasted Habanero:
Fire Roasted Habanero Hot Sauce has great flavor! Nothing is more flavorful than fire roasted habaneros combined with the freshest ingredients to create such a versatile hot sauce! The heat from this sauce will build in your mouth and leave you with a pleasant taste of garlic and other spices. This Hot Sauce is a flavor king!

  • Cayenne Garlic :
The cayenne pepper is the darling of Cajun country with its bold, lingering heat and pungent flavor. This sauce blends the lively cayenne with plenty of fresh garlic - a virtual gastronomic jam session.

  • Jalapeño Classic:
If you're gettin' bowlegged riding the range lookin' for a great tastin' classic jalapeño sauce, search no further, Pilgrim. Made from a heapin' helpin' of green jalapeños (America's favorite pepper), fresh lime, lemon and garlic, our Jalapeño Classic will set your spurs a jinglin'!

  • Chipotle Adobo:
The chipotle pepper, a smoke-dried jalapeño, is the focus of this fiery sauce. Stewed in a spicy tomato adobo sauce, the peppers provide an intense, smoky, slightly sweet flavor that is enhanced by a hint of citrus. Es muy macho—no crybabies, por favor!

  • Red Savina Habanero:
Red Savina Habanero peppers are touted in the Guinness Book of World Records as "the hottest pepper in the world." With such a distinction, we figured this incendiary chili was worth basing a hot sauce on... and here it is! Not for the faint-hearted, this tropical blend has a hurricane force, pour with caution.

Thank you to Kristie R. for identifying one of the men in this photograph!
A while ago, several photos and documents were donated by Maureen Campbell Clark from Manchester, New Jersey, a relative of Walter R. Parpart, Jr.  Walter was one of the crewmen of the fated Flight 19, a training Squadron of 5 TBM Avengers whose disappearance initiated the "Mystery of the Bermuda Triangle."  The photograph was taken at the New River in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1945.

"I believe one of the photos provided by Katherine Taylor has my father-in-law (kneeling): George A. Wilson ARM3 of Patchogue, N.Y., who was stationed with the members of Flight 19 in 1945. He too had photographs of all the men that perished (Flight 19), as he was a member of that squadron but did not fly that day. He just passed away six weeks ago, which lead me to your museum site to purchase a brick in his memory."  -- Kristy R.
