The NAS Banana River Monument will commemorate the PBM-5 Mariner "Trainer 49" with its crew of 13, lost during it's rescue mission for Flight 19, which is one of the great aviation mysteries. NAS Fort Lauderdale Museum members contributed to create a site and a monument to honor the crewmen.
The monument was placed on its concrete base and oriented so that, as you're looking at the inscription on the plaque, you'll be facing the Banana River. It's a beautiful setting. Attached is a GOOGLE shot showing the location. Atlantic Icon Company, the folks who donated/built the concrete base, plan to build sidewalks & add shrubbery later. A dedication ceremony is in the works, and will probably take place in February 2017. Will post photos when we can. --Regards, Jon Myhre
