The Ewa Battlefield, Wake Island and Midway Island can all be linked to Ewa Field. All of the planes and pilots came from Ewa Field. We are tracking down all the pilots and aircraft BuNo. They are almost all directly connected to still existing aircraft revetments at MCAS Ewa Field. No, these are NOT the concrete dome revetments that were built later used as horse stables.The first Medal of Honor of the war was given to Ewa Field pilot Capt. Henry T. "Hank" Elrod, killed at Wake Island. The only Medal of Honor of the Midway battle was given to Ewa Field Capt. Richard Fleming.
Both had the main roads at MCAS Ewa named for them, as was the case with other KIA Medal of Honor USMC pilots. When the Navy took over the property they renamed all of them after Navy ships. However we can still honor all of them by requiring the National Park Service and US Navy BRAC to do adequate, professional site documentation before all of these still existing sites are disposed of to land developers. It is a major dishonor to these pilots and the American people to lose these sites without professional archaeological documentation.
