A big thank you to Richard Haddad, one of our members and volunteers! He has been working hard all week, donating time and materials, doing landscaping of the Museum's grounds: pruning and trimming overgrown bushes and adding mulch all around the landscape. The place looks fantastic! Peter Accornero, our newest member and volunteer, refurbished the building's support pillars. The five pillars are from the now extinct Dade County pine. They were stripped of the old particle board, holes filled, sanded and then shellacked. They were beautifully restored! Peter also helped with painting the baseboards, ramps, rails and steps, along with Ray Rivera, our Maintenance Officer and a group of volunteer sailors from the USS Gettysburg. We have a unique history, and if you haven't visited in awhile, this would be a good time to set aside a Saturday afternoon and drop by for a couple of hours. Volunteers are encouraged to contribute their time or ideas or to organize an event. There is something for everyone. While you're enjoying the past, you'll get a glimpse at the future of this Museum too. If you would like to become a volunteer of the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum, please download, or print this application. Complete the form and send to us via e-mail, or snail mail to: NASFL Museum 4000 West Perimeter Road Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33315 The morning of April 27th, Mr. Erwin Seftin & Capt. Brian Fulford from Broward Navy Days organized a group of 16 sailors from the USS Gettysburg. They did a great job in painting several areas inside and outside the Museum! Ray Rivera, our Maintenance Officer and Peter Accornero, our newest member and volunteer, organized the sailors in groups. They all painted baseboards, ramps, handrails, steps, the bases of the flag pole and gun. Great job guys! Thank you for your spirit and service! Volunteer Crew of the USS Gettysburg
Thank you to the hardworking and wonderful volunteers from UNIT VTU 0808 G. These Navy Reserve Officers finished the Main Exhibit Room carpet installation at the NASFL Museum! Every piece of carpet was custom cut to fit around the perimeter of the room and posts. This required moving around a lot of things and working on hands and knees. The carpet was donated by Broward County Aviation Department and began to be installed last summer. The work was stopped for a while due to several other projects that were being tackled. On Sunday February 5th, the group arrived at 7:15am and spent the day at the Museum until the project was completed. What a privilege it is to work together with this capable and enthusiastic group!
Our deepest thanks go to CAPT. SCOTT HAHN, CAPT. MICHAEL McGEHEE, CDR. RICH SILVA, CDR. REY HORTA, CHIEF DEBORAH KRIEGER, JOHN BLOOM and JOHN CASEY. Main Exhibit Room Carpet Installation: The old carpet has all been removed, the floors are being repaired, and beautiful new carpet donated by the Airport is being installed by our volunteer members: Mike McGee, John Bloom, Rob Taylor, Karl Bork, John Casey and our youngest member Richard Jones, who served two tours of duty in Iraq; one aboard the USS George Washington Aircraft Carrier, and the other as a soldier in the U.S. Army. Helping with the work were also U.S Navy VTU 0808G members: MAC Patrick Bowden, CAPT. Scott Hahn, HM2 Richard McGowan, CAPT. Stephen Schaffer. Also member Rob Taylor is being generous in donating materials and his expertise for carpet installation. And thank you to Ray Rivera for helping in the maintenance of the Museum. Our presence in the World Wide Web is expanding, as more and more people find us: Shavonne L. Nembhard is a student at Barry University, doing a research paper on the History of South Florida with Professor Brasom. Because her brother is in the Navy, she decided to research if there were some historical places in Florida about the Navy, and she found the NASFL Museum's website at the top of her search query. She came to visit with her son Brandon and became our newest members. Brandon was also interested in becoming a volunteer for the summer. Welcome Shavonne & Brandon!
Work is progressing on the outside of the building by the Aviation Department. We are close to getting the sprinkler system hooked up and finalized. We also have several New Members sponsored by other members, welcome new members!
If you wish to volunteer now it's the time! Call the Museum at: (954) 359-4400 to set an appointment. Lots of great changes are happening! The Sprinkler system was set-up and the main Exhibit room is being re-organized and spruced up. The whole Museum is like a treasure chest because among the storage boxes (and rooms yet to be explored), we keep finding all sorts of vintage images, posters, articles, plaques, artifacts and WWII memorabilia. We're trying to find a place for everything to be incorporated into the exhibits. Our thanks to everyone that has contributed! - Click on thumbnails to enlarge and read descriptions -
