New Donations to the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum:

The NASFL Museum wishes to thank the following individuals for their generous donations:
Artifacts from the USS Saratoga Stephen J. Engasser (aka Gass-man), served on the USS Saratoga (CV-60) from 1987 to 1991 as a Grape in V-4 Division. He worked below decks and on the roof during Operation Desert Storm. He now lives in S. Florida and works for PalmHomes, LLC selling Real Estate. Stephen donated two artifacts from the Saratoga: the ship's level indicator from the deck, and a ship's telephone. Crew members were invited to take "souvenir artifacts" from the Saratoga and the final crew went on board in June of 2012, to remove historical artifacts from the ship. Stephen also donated his wool Cruise Jacket which is adorned with many colorful patches from the places the crew visited while in service. These items are on now on display. Thank you Stephen! Click to view larger The USS Saratoga (CV/CVA/CV-60), was one of four Forrestal- class supercarriers built for the US Navy in the 1950s. Saratoga was the sixth US Navy ship, and the second aircraft carrier, to be named for the Battle of Saratoga in the American Revolutionary War. It was commissioned in 1956, and she spent most of her career in the Mediterranean, but also participated in the Vietnam War. One of her last operational duties was to participate in Operation Desert Storm.
Saratoga was decommissioned in 1994. Multiple unsuccessful attempts were made to preserve her as a museum ship. The ship is still afloat and pier-side at Newport, Rhode Island Naval Station, where she awaits to be dismantled. Learn more about the USS Saratoga Online Donations Page added to our website! The Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Historical Association is the nonprofit, 501(c)(3) educational and fundraising organization that supports the development of the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum (NASFL Museum). The Association is responsible for the maintenance of the Link Trainer Building which is on the U.S National Register of historic places and the only Military Museum in Broward County. We depend on your contributions to ensure the continued success of the Museum. Your charitable, tax deductible contributions to the Museum will be designated to specific areas or programs, or allotted to greatest need. Annual gifts can be given in installments throughout the year, or in one lump sum. Donors who give $1,000 or more for the year become a part of our Benefactors' Circle and receive permanent recognition in the Museum, a copy of the Museum's book publications, recognition in our Avenger newsletter, and a Flight 19 print by artist Bob Jenny.
This Museum has been instrumental in preserving the memory of the naval air station base during the period of 1942 -1946, as well as the memory of Flight 19, one of the great aviation mysteries. In addition, a 19 year old future US President George H.W. Bush lived at NASFL as a young Ensign to train as a torpedo/bomber pilot. The Museum houses an array of WWII memorabilia, a research library, a Link Trainer considered an Historic Engineering Landmark, a 25x7 aviation mural, original naval air paintings, and a recreated soldier's barracks. Contributions play a major role in our ability to expand and enhance the Museum and its educational programs. Thank You ! VISIT OUR DONATIONS PAGE The Naval Aviator |
